Our ‘We Are The Champions 2017’ events took place recently. This is our Summer showcase of sports at St. James. As ever, our week took the form of an Olympic Games with a full opening ceremony with special guests from Wakefield Wildcats and a full parade of all athletes - this included over two hundred team flags and banners. Parents were invited to attend all events and to share in our children's successes. Each area of school then took part in their own house competitions - including discus, shot put, javelin, assault course, novelty races, relay, long distance and sprints. We try to create an element of competition in these events - we feel this is important to encourage but we also give every child a permanent member of the event to take away with them. In true Olympic style we then formally closed the events with a parade of medals and final house winners declared. We were delighted to welcome Canon Arthur Mauya and Miss Melina Galibona (from our partner region of Mara in Tanzania), alongside the Mayor of Wakefield as our guests of honour. We know that sport is adored in Ragata so it seemed the ideal way to stand 'shoulder to shoulder' with our friends in Tanzania by sharing our love of track and field events. It is also wonderful to give our junior sports leaders the opportunity to take on leadership and organisational roles during the events.
included within the events are various fundraising opportunities which, this year, included a cake/refreshment stall, giant assault course and adult donations to raise money for our agreed goals. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped at each sports event either as a sports leader or fund raiser. In total we managed to raise a grand total of £941.05. Cake and Refreshment stall: 641.05. Sponsorship forms: £275.00. Adult donations: £25.00
