The children are organised into classes of mixed ability and, where necessary, mixed year groups. Great care is taken, however, to ensure that all children are following programmes of work appropriate to their age and ability and appropriate layer of challenge.
The placement of any particular child in a particular class is at the discretion of the headteacher.
Since September 2005 all teachers in all schools, by law, have to be guaranteed 10% of their timetabled time out of class for planning, preparation and assessment (PPA) tasks. This equates to half a day a week. In addition teachers need extra time for their leadership and management work.
As part of our ongoing focus upon pupils individual starting points and making classroom provision, each day, more appropriately matched to this, we operate a streamed grouping system for English from year 1-6 and also in mathematics for KS1. Mrs Butterworth, Mrs Lewis, Mr Swift and Mrs Lloyd are our additional teachers for this work.
All Read, Write, Inc. work is undertaken in streamed groups.
All streamed groups are reviewed regularly and are fluid - thereby enabling pupils to receive the appropriate level of challenge at the right moment.
